Stats Pr0n of the Day: U.S. Map of Hate Speech on Twitter
Since June 2012, Dr. Monica Stevens of Humboldt State University in California has been mapping more than 150,000 geotagged tweets that contain homophobic, racist or abliest language. The result is the Geography of Hate, an interactive map of the U.S. which reveals the hotspots of “hate tweets” across the country. A deeper analysis of the project is available at Floating Sheep.
Restored Faith in Humanity of the Day: Reddit Restores WWII Veteran’s Damaged Navy Photo
Back in April, at the request of his 87-year-old grandfather, Redditor stevieboy1984 turned to the /r/PicRequests subreddit to see if anyone could clean up a scanned JPEG image file of his grandfather’s World War II-era photo taken during his service in the Navy as a submarine sonar/radar operator. After a number of people offered their photoshop wizardries to help its restoration, stevieboy1984 showed his grandfather six variations before handing him a framed version of top commenter unhi’s submission. Didn’t See That Coming of the Day: Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker Wanted for Murder
This morning, the authorities in Union County, New Jersey issued an arrest warrant for the 34-year-old Caleb Lawrence McGillvary (better known as Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker) in connection to the homicide of a 73-year-old attorney named Joseph Galfy, Jr. According to the local news station WABC, the 73-year-old man was found bludgeoned to death in his home in Clark, New Jersey earlier this week on Monday. His current whereabouts remains unknown and a reward of $5,000 is being offered for his arrest.
